Pumpkin Halloween Sampler

It's that time of year

when the frost is on the pumpkin

and the leaves turn beautiful colors.

Autumn!

The foliage has been losing its freshness

through the month of August,

and here and there a yellow leaf shows itself

like the first gray hair amidst the locks

of a beauty who has seen one season too many.

I feel a creative stirring in my soul,

and anxiously begin decorating for the holidays.

Both are made from fabric
and stuffed with polyfill.

Her dress is a nice mustard cotton fabric

with pineapple and x's.

Tarnished safety pins
were placed on the shoulders
to finish the dress.

Bloomers are made from osnaburg fabric.

Everything has been coffee/vanilla

stained for that nice well worn look!

Teresa Miller grew up in rural Pennsylvania

In 1989, she began creating Amish dolls
for a local gift shop.

Her husband creates the beautiful wooden
pieces while she completes the finishing touches.

Meet ALICE

Alice wears a cute little dress,

nautical themed with a peter pan collar.

A bright red vintage button decorates the front

while a little white vintage button is attached

to the back of her dress.

Alice's eyes are made from

two vintage dark brown buttons.

Her body and dress have both been

distressed with coffee and sandpaper

to give her a little vintage feel.

She has tiny pink stitches

on her arm sewn by her mum.

Apparently after Alice had fallen down a hole!

Her face and paws are hand embroidered.

Her shoes and socks hand painted.

Alice also wears a blue and

red woolen scarf knitted by her mum!

This little bunny stands 9 inches.

You will also receive an authentic

little Black Crow tag

that lists all the ingredients

used to make this bunny,

her name, date of birth and edition number.

It's been some time since

I have posted to this blog.

I decided to dust out the cobwebs,

and cleaned out the spam comments.

(sooo many opportunists out there).

Perhaps the title of the this blog is

attractive to those particular spammers....

It's a shame there is always someone

Recently, I happened to stumble upon a new site called
A Fine Farmhouse.
Once again, I found the work from an artist
I consider the real deal, when it comes to primitives.

Located in Centertown Kentucky

You may recognize Dru A. McCarty from
Cinnamon Creek Cabin,
featured here back in December 2007.
I was delighted to see she now has a blog,
and received her permission to announce it!

She writes that she has been sewing, stuffing,
stitching, painting, and grubbing like a mad woman!
She shares her thoughts and photos of her past creations.

I get the feeling she doesn't realize how
genuinely talented she is!

Inspired by schoolgirl and early dutch samplers,
Nan loves to cross stitch early work stitcheries,
with a passion for pinkeeps,
needlebooks, and ditty bags.

The finished items look as though they're antique
and were made in the 1800's.

She uses reproduction fabric and fills her pinkeeps
with sawdust for that authentic look and feel.

This Amish Alphabet Sampler Pinkeep
includes a heart motif from
an early Amish sampler.

This pinkeep is stitched on
32-count antique cream linen,
using variegated Caron
wildflower floss called Fiesta.

~ 7" wide by 3-3/4" high ~

The backing is an 1800's reproduction fabric of
Sea Glass Blue with Drab Brown and Red in it,
providing a beautiful complimentary contrast
to the colors in the sampler.

A distressed chalkboard holds
two antique look pieces.
A punched schoolhouse with flag
and a mini sampler.

Both pieces were hand made and designed
as this artist worked on them.
Truly unique ~ no patterns were used.

She states:
"When I made the sampler,
I imagined myself as a 7 year old,
trying to make her first stitched piece.
The name is my grandmother's,
who was an artisan in her own right".

The piece was done in the naive
style of a child,
stitches are not perfect,
and some are larger than others.

She made designs on things she
saw in her own life;
her kitty, a bird, nature and designs
she had seen her sisters do.
A piece to remind us of the simpler times
in life and the American spirit
that made this country so great.

The chalkboard has two sawtooth hangers
to hang on the wall,
or you can put it on a shelf
or in a table setting.

The chalkboard measure 12" x 8" and has a
matte finish to protect it.
The punched piece measures 4" x 3 1/2"
and the sampler is 5 1/2" x 5".

In Gretchen's words:

"This gal is 22 inches tall!!
Made her out of muslin
that has been all stained up!!
Her face has a felted red nose
and warm and natural eyes that
have been hand-sewn on!!

Her eyes are also made out of
2 old big buttons!!!
Her lil' eyelashes, brows and mouth
are all sewn on with embroidery thread!!

Crazy hair is funky reddish yarn
that I sewed on and tied into place!!!
Now.. her lil' shirt is made out of warm
and natural and I drew a lil' shamrock
freehand on some green felt and
sewn that baby on there!!

Yippie!!
She has a funky green material
I picked up as her lil' skirt!
Both have been stained up as well!!!

Let's talk shoes now....
Those cuties are painted on with
black paint and buttoned up with
2 old funky pearl-like buttons!!
I think they match her outfit just perfect!!!

Her bouquet of flowers are once again
my famous old "yoyo's" that I have sewn

While browsing through the listings of one of
my very favorite eBay groups; BLESTB
I was delighted to find someone new to me.

Her listings are very simple; pictures to a
minimum, yet something in the descriptions
pulls you right in.

I wanted to know more about this person, and this
is what I found on her ME PAGE in part ...

"I love simple, humble things.....the soft sound of thread being pulled through fabric.....dolls with humble, crudely stitched faces.....wool, be it the fragrant curls of raw lambswool or the wonderful texture of an old wool blanket.....the rich nuances of color in white ironstone (white ironstone sounds plain, but the best kind isn’t).....

And then there is my garden! Gardening is never far from my thoughts. Even when I am creating a primitive doll, I imagine them in their little garden plots – picking herbs and tending the vegetables or putting a sprig of chamomile in their apron pocket just to delight in the sweet scent as it is gently crushed against the fabric."

Her description of herself is the very essence
of what I felt reading the details in her listings.

This verse found on the pinkeep is
from a vintage Halloween postcard.

“You need not be afraid of me;
I’m just a grown up pumpkin seed.”

When I contacted Wendy to get her permission
to feature her on The Ditty, I
received a very warm reply.

She mentioned that she has begun to offer
patterns for her designs and will be
releasing new ones monthly.

She is currently in the process of
rebuilding her web site with a new host,
but added it is slow going due to
working a full time job.

Patriotic American Eagle Doll

His head, wings, and feet are all
sculpted from stone clay,
which air dries and is just like wood
when it sets up, it can
even be drilled and sawed…

His arms and legs are formed from wire
and wrapped with batting so they
remain gently poseable.

His hat is made from card board
and wrapped with fabric.

He truly has the look as though
he was created many years ago,
and would make the perfect addition
to any one's collection of Americana décor.

He is wearing a tea stained pin striped
red and white pants with cuffs at the bottom.

Along with a white dress shirt with crisp
pointed collar, along with a red vest,
a velvet red bow tie, and topped of with
his star studded navy blue coat and tails..

Of course we must not forget his top hat,
which is not attached so he can be
posed with or without it…

He measures approx. 25" from the
top of his hat to the tip of his feet.

All the features were hand painted and
finished with special techniques to make
him look passed down for generations.

Each piece comes signed and dated
by the artist along with a
certificate of authenticity and hang tag.

Pepper, waits and waits...pines for Walt.

She stops eating, doesn't play...until one day,
Walt returns to his window.

As many of us know, eBay is enforcing a new policy regarding the restriction of auction-style sales of digital material such as e-patterns and templates. These types of listings must now be located in the "classified section" which means the costs alone will be too significant to make it worth their while.

This will have a tremendous impact on
many wonderful folks in the primitive community.

We will see many scrambling to other sites to sell their items such as websites, Esty, Pattern Mart, and online booths. Many of us will be wondering where our favorite pattern designers have relocated. I personally, have already received e-mails from designers hoping to keep their customer base intact.

Beulah is a very primitive black doll.
Made of muslin that has been painted,
sanded and put through the aging process.

She turned out nice and grungy!

Beulah has a pinch stitched nose
and muslin squares for her eyes.

Her mouth was hand stitched along
with the X's on her eyes.

She wears a grungy
dark red and mustard
homespun dress
and measures approx. 27" tall.

Beulah is a big girl!

She was made using a pattern
by Chestnut Junction.

Beulah looks great sitting in an old chair
or you can hang her on the wall.

Extreme Primitive OOAK Folk Art Doll

Rosemary is made from prim stained osnaburg.
Painted with acrylics & sanded several times.
Each layer made her look older and rougher.

Finally she was grunged heavily with
coffee, vanilla, & cinnamon.

She is partially rag stuffed
so she sits up nicely.

Her arms are lightly wired,
so you can pose them.

Her eyes are two mismatched, vintage buttons,
her nose and mouth are pinch-stitch sculpted.

Her hair is a wool yarn
that’s a very sassy brown with a lot of
the coffee, vanilla, & cinnamon grunge in it!

The hair is stitched in place,
then styled it in little pigtails.

Rosemary holds a little "Card" Ornie
(attached w/ rusty pin)
that’s quilted w/ batting,
heavily aged, and stained.

The Card Ornie is 4 1/2 inches long,
and a bit over 3 inches wide.

A tiny, heart shaped piece is tacked it on
w/ an old, mother-of-pearl button.

The heart is made from the pink toile on
a cream background fabric with
some hand stitching all around the edge.

Rosemary's little dress is made of a
very grungy pink rosebud print.

It has a high, gathered waistline,
short sleeves, and hand stitching
at the neckline.

She wears a little apron from the same
lovely pink toile and gathered it with floss,
attached with rusty pins and bells in the front.

Rosemary is roughly 14 inches tall.
Her Ornie is about 3 inches wide & 5 1/2 inches long.

The little guy is 9 inches tall,
that is including his arms.
(They are stationary)

The little rabbit is whispering

They are both made of muslin
that has been stained and sanded

for a well worn look!

Their eyes are done in artist pencils,
they nose and mouth stitched with floss.
Their ears are wired and hand stitched
and blushed on the insides.

Their chests are painted.
They have wool needle-felted
to their tales.

Their paws are needle sculpted
and the little rabbits paws are
stitched to his father's ear.

Well, I am honored to be "blog tagged" by Michele
of Holly Tree Primitives.

I decided to oblige Michele, mostly because I recently upset a person by choosing to feature her on this blog. She wanted nothing to do with it, and directed her anger towards me. I totally respect her wishes, and I truly meant no harm. Since then, I am hesistant to feature other artists, while I sort out whether I am doing a good thing or not.

I created this blog, with the intent to feature other prim artists,
and show a collection of some really awesome talent. Initially I received a warm response from folks that I chose to feature. My heart is saddened to think my good intentions hurt someone, or made them angry.

I am posting something about myself, to hopefully show that I simply love primitives. I marvel at all the talent that abounds in cyber world, and it was only my intent to post a collection of the beautiful works of so many wonderful people, to give added exposure to them. I didn't realize a lot of things about all things "primitive" until I discovered the internet. The love was always in my heart, but the more I saw, the more obsessed I became.

I am happy to say that I have made friendships in the process. There is a special bond amoungst prim artisans that I discovered, and enjoy immensely!

I hope to continue this blog, but I need to make sure in my heart, it is the right thing to do.

5 Things about me:

I am a Leap Year baby, and yes this year I will actually have a birthday!

My least favorite color is purple. I have no idea how that came to be, yet my birthstone is Amethyst?

I am constantly amazed how a seed can land and bloom in the most precarious location, yet with good intentions, I can not yield the same result. One day I stumbled upon the most beautiful foxglove plant, prospering in the woods, where I had thrown a plant plucked from my garden from a prior season.

I can have anxieties while shopping for clothes, but won't even blink an eye, when shopping for oodles of fabric, paints or patterns. LOL!

One of my favorite memories of a child, is of my grandfather. (To me, He resembled the late Jimmy Durante) He was forever the center of attention, whether playing cribbage, while tap dancing, or telling jokes in french; Every person was sure to be rolling on the floor with tears streaming down their faces, even if they didn't understand a single word.

Some days I search and search
for the right primtives to post
on this site, and some days
they find me! After receiving a
post on my blog,
my curiousity led me to
The Holly Tree Blog.
From there I was able to link over to her website
called Holly Tree Primitives.

This is where I found these cute little clutch and hankie dolls!
Here is cute little 11" "MABEL". The cutest little prim doll that has been stuffed with rags, stained to perfection; twine for her hair, and evidence of button long gone.

Or how about 13 1/2" baby "ANNA",
made with roving and an heirloom table linen.

Then there is the Hanky Prairie Doll,
a perfect doll to tuck in your
favorite prim gathering. She's 9" long,
and wears a beautiful tatttered and stained hanky.

It was my pleasure to visit these sites today.
I felt like I had found another kindred spirit,
and I'm sure you will feel the same way.

Friendship is one of the most endearing
heartstrings that bind us together.
As with most of my samplers, I stitched
it with cotton floss on stained osnaburg.

It bears a crowned heart signifying
love and loyalty,
a heart shaped skeleton key,
and an expression of friendship in verse.

It bears the date of "1810",
and has two rusty straight pins
andtwo rusty safety pins hold
a few vintage buttons.

The back is a lovely muslin sprinkled
over with roses and hearts
also nicely stained.

It's stuffed and the edges whipstitched
in a deep cranberry color.
It measures approx. 5" square.

Andie Ferguson refers to herself as a maker girl,
and explains 'making' is an addiction for her,
having respect and admiration for handmade goods.

Hair is black sheep's wool that was sewn on.

Primitive Valentine Horse Doll
an original design by Meadowforkprimitives

One of a kind doll,
whose "Mane" idea happens to be
horsin' around.

Crafted from unbleached muslin,
this hilarious steed was formed
from 5 separate pieces.
First, the head shape,
then his body,
then came the long skinny legs,
and finally whipstitched all together.

His horsey head is inserted onto
the neck piece of the body shape,
then sewn firmly.

This stud was painted with a mixture
of golden brown and burnt sienna,
thinned liberally with coffee stain.

Antique white was painted for his
blaze, stockings and white belly.
His hooves were painted grey.

Eyes and nostrils are handstitched
from black floss,
and his mane and tail
are made from jute string.

Liberally sanded and stained with
a coffee and cinnamon mixture,
and lightly sanded again.

A wonderful homespun print scarf
is wrapped around his neck
A stained tag tied with a rusty jingle bell
reads, "Wanna Horse Around?".

A barn red primitive heart crafted from muslin
has been tucked into his bent leg (arm?)
together with another bell and a
tiny star print fabric scrap,
two sprigs of sweet annie
in burgundy and green.

This great doll measures 24" long
from tip of his ears to his hooves,
and would make a wonderful
Valentine door greeter;
use indoors as a hanging;
prop him in your favorite chair;
or in a corner cupboard.

Although crafted for Valentine's Day,
he would make a great addition to your
primitive decor all year round.

The penny’s are 1.5“ and 1“ stacked.

they just aren’t perfect!

Readying the Sleigh

It's time for Santa to start getting the sleigh
ready for his long journey on Christmas Eve.
He has a salt sack with treats for his reindeer,
or in case it should get especially icy!
He has the penny blanket that Mrs. Claus
made to keep him warm and toasty.

He has sleigh bells and his special helper
who brought along a string of lights to
make things more festive.

Santa is made from old linen cloth
and he measures 16-1/2 inches tall,
about 9 inches wide and
he is very tightly stuffed with
rags and quite weighty!
(He weighs almost 5 pounds!)

His face is stitched with his lips
separately applied and hand painted eyes.
I have just been gifted with this wonderful
wool that makes up his hat,
coat and pocket. Thank You Ginny!

It is a black, cocoa brown and
cream plaid wool.
I used some black wool to accent with.
He has some of my favorite old black
buttons on his sleeves, collar and the
front of his coat.
I hand picked each one
and they are all different.

The penny blanket is all in drab brown
and black wools, entirely hand stitched and grubby.
I tacked the penny blanket on to Santa,
but it can be removed to enjoy after Christmas.
It would look great with an old hog scraper
and candle sitting on it.

An old black distressed leather strap,
has rusty bells attached to it with rusty wire,
just sits on Santa's shoulders.

The salt sack is VERY old.
I added a patch of early black calico
with stars and it is filled with grubby
great smelling bath salts and scented lavender.
The graphics on the sack are wonderful!

Santa's helper sits in Santa's pocket.
She is a tiny stump doll with arms.
She is all dressed in stars,
one fabric is a reproduction,
while the other is an early one.

She wears a hat and scarf in a
black and cream checked wool.
Wooden Christmas lights have been drilled with holes,
and painted with added rust to the ends.

I used rusty wire to thread them
into a string of lights.
Signed and dated.

I recently purchased this Claus and Crow pattern by Chestnut Junction, and I couldn't help but notice the finished one offered on eBay, and made by Eprimovic. I have been fascinated over and over again, and continually find myself drawn to the quality of this artist's beautiful handiwork.

When I tried to research to see if there was a special meaning to the word Eprimovic, all my results yeilded only words of praise (feedback) from eBay buyers.

I think we have a real gem here!

Made from pieces of old vintage feedsacks
that have been aged for that old time look.

Two grubbied candles dipped and roll in spices.
Each have rusty wire wrapped around
and loops on the back for easy hanging.
Tucked under the wire is a bunch of sweet annes sprigs.
So nice and primitive looking.

The quilts, linens, feedsacks used are
found at various places; antique shoppes, fleatiques,
auctions, estate sales etc.

This quilt sack has been aged for the
old time look and worn feel.

These candle keeps each measure about 7 x 2 1/2.

Display this sweet candlle keeps in your
old piesafe or cupboard knobs.

Hang off of a door knob or just laying on a tabletop
with some other old and vintage items.

This is a way to get that bit of prim into your home.

Don't you always have the urge to stain everything?

I love how this designer chose not to.

This santa is so pure and simple in the stark white.

His coat is made from a vintage flannel blanket
purchased by the designer at an estate sale.

She used white fiber for his fur and mittens.

He is mounted on an old porch spindle.

I chose this photo because of the clever

partridge in a pear tree.

So simple, and so very prim.

The Barefoot Angel

The Barefoot Angel

Barefoot and dirty, the little girl just sat in the park and watched people go by. She never tried to speak, she never said a word. Many people passed, but not one person glanced her way, no one stopped, including me. The next day I decided to go back to the park, curious if the little girl would still be there.

Right in the very spot she was yesterday, she sat perched on high, with the saddest look in her eyes. But today I could not just walk away, concerned only with my affairs. I found myself walking over to the little girl. For as we all know, a park full of strange people is not a place for young children to play alone.

As I began walking towards her, I could see the back of the little girl's dress indicated a deformity. I figured that was the reason the people just passed by and made no effort to care.

As I got closer, the little girl slightly lowered her eyes to avoid my intent stare. I could see the shape of her back more clearly. It was grotesquely shaped in a humped over form. I smiled to let her know it was okay, I was there to help, to talk.

I sat down beside her and opened with a simple "hello." The little girl acted shocked and stammered a "hi" after along stare into my eyes. I smiled and she shyly smiled back.

We talked 'til darkness fell and the park was completely empty. Everyone was gone and we were alone. I asked the girl why she was so sad. The little girl looked at me and said, "Because I am different." I immediately said, "That you are!" and smiled.

The little girl acted even sadder,
she said, "I know."

"Little girl," I said,
"you remind me of an angel, sweet and innocent."

She looked at me and smiled slowly,
she stood to her feet and said, "Really?"

"Yes, dear, you're like a little guardian angel
sent to watch over all those people walking by."

She nodded her head, "YES!" and smiled, and with that she spread her wings and said, "I am. I'm your guardian angel," with a twinkle in her eye.

I was speechless, sure I was seeing things.

She said, "And when you began thinking of someone other than yourself, my job here was done."

Immediately I stood to my feet and said, "Wait, so why did no one else stop to help an angel?"

She looked at me and smiled, "You're the only one who could see me," and she was gone.

With that my life was changed dramatically. When you think you're all you have; remember, your angel is always watching over you. Mine was ....

I did a search on ebay for PRHG and I was curious about this one. When I read about the barefoot angel, tears came to my eyes, and I was compelled to bid on this. I truly love this artists' technique
for making really unique OOAK prim dolls.

Grungy, nose and mouth are needle sculpted,
eyes are stitched and a lovely head of sheep's wool hair.

A homespun dress with two buttons at the neckline.
Signed and dated with a special gift.

Ella Ree IS really quite elegant in her simplicity!

I have purchased a mini bust doll from this artist,
and I have to say I LOVE her work!

Primitive Golden Tabby Kitty

As a beginner rughooker, this hand-hooked chair mat is so interesting to me. I love the way the cat just pops with the mottled brown background, and red trim. Notice the binding is a combination of brown and red wool yarn. This is my favorite method to finish my wool projects. I like the way it lies flat with the heaviness of the edges.
I have had the most pleasant experience dealing with Tammy and Renee of Skip To My Ewe. They ship their packages right away, always well packaged, and they rate high on my list of favorites on eBay.

I'm usually shopping for bits of wool here and there from this site. I love the colors they offer, and the wool arrives ready to hook. The photos give a good representation of what you can expect, and I have never been disappointed.

Recently, I was pondering how folks would feel about dressing my "santa's in progress" in non traditional colors. This elegant santa caught my eye, dressed in warm browns and creams. I love that his coat is made from an old fleece throw, and his pants are a brown chenille.

The rusty bells really pop on the trim of his hat, and the mismatched vintage buttons really pull his suit together. This santa has many details, and even includes a sleigh, making him unique, and a true collector's dream.

This 3-day listing is doing rather well, and is very deserving of the high bids so far. This guy had 252 views when I took a peek!

I envy the lucky person winning this bid!

one of my favorite designers; Crows Roost Prims.

To my surprise, she is also an elite member
of a fairly new group TLOFA,
The Ladies of Folk Art.

I love the primitive talent in this group, and highly recommend bookmarking this site, as you won't want to miss what is sure to come. I see there is a new website in the works, displaying some of the awesome examples of these talented members can do!

Primitive Bettys~Newest release!

Today I received an email from Betty announcing her newest release, as well as some pretty important dates!
Belsnickle and Ginger

Each dolly is about 8 inches tall and
reach about 5 inches from hand to hand.
These two have a little wider body
than the others so far....

this allows you to put a little pocket on their backs.
What is the pocket for?
You could put your list for Santa,
tuck in a small candy cane,
or even a gold coin.

Adding the decorations to these are so much fun....
rust bells, sweet annie, olde keys, vintage buttons ~
whatever your heart desires.

Also, I have seen Santa's in so many different colors.
It would be great fun to make a whole collection;
red, blue, green, and gold ~ then display them
with your other seasonal decor.

Miss Purrudence and Miss Briar May Bell
Another release of needlepunch dollies.

These needlepunch dollies are from Betty's original line.
They measure about 8" tall, and 4 1/2" hand to hand.
Needle punched with cotton floss,
backed with reproduction antique cotton fabric,
and filled with sawdust.

Trim is hand spun wool yarn that has been
stited around with linen thread.

Lastly, aged in a walnut bath.
Stitched with initials and date on reverse.

I was recently referred to this site by a friend.
I thought how appropriate it would be
to feature some of her primitive needfuls,
(her version of ditty bags!)

Olde Pantry Bags
These pantry bags come in a set of FOUR.
They are 10 1/2" by 8".
They each have a stained muslin panel with:
corn meal, sugar, beans, and flour.

All handstitched in black floss on them,
plus have an old piece of grocery string
for their drawstring.

Prairie Keep Bag
This mustard Prairie Keep bag
measures 9 1/4" long and have been
gathered with an old piece of mercantile string.

They make a nice addition to your peg racks
along with your early prairie dresses and aprons!
